RELEASE: 93-125
NASA and Supra Medical Corp., Chadds Ford, Pa., announced today that they
will jointly develop advanced ultrasound instrumentation which NASA will use
for non-destructive evaluation of a new class of woven composite materials and
Supra Medical will use to extend its high resolution capability for the
non-invasive examination of the breast.
The collaboration began late last year at NASA's Langley Research Center,
Hampton, Va., under the NASA-Industry Fellowship program.
Dr. Thomas Yost, a Langley senior research physicist, said, "We are
optimistic about the capability of the proposed instrumentation. It will allow
us to locate and monitor small cracks throughout the life of some new aerospace
materials."
Evelyna Dyson-Cantwell, President of Supra Medical, added "We are
developing techniques and ultrasound instrumentation which will allow safe, low
cost, radiation-free, painless and verifiable diagnostic capabilities for
detecting cancerous breast tumors at very early stages of growth."
The Supra Medical president added that the firm's goal ultimately is to
develop breast imaging technology which will serve all age groups of women from
pre-adolescent to post-menopausal. The firm also intends to produce a final
marketable design incorporating image pattern recognition technology in the
device, enhancing its utility to medical care professionals.
Langley has worked with Supra Medical on prior technology development
projects. Supra Medical develops and markets specialty medical devices for the
diagnosis, monitoring and continuing treatment of skin disorders including
cancers, burns and other kinds of wounds.

MAGELLAN WEEKLY STATUS REPORT 7/9/93
Magellan Significant Events for Week ending 7/02/93
1. The Magellan Transition Experiment continues to go well after 390 orbits of
aerobraking in the Venus atmosphere. All subsystems are reported to be
nominal. The apoapsis has been reduced below 3600 km (from its original 8460
km).
2. Atmospheric density has decreased since COTM9 a week ago which has resulted
in dynamic pressure staying below 0.30 N/m2. Prior to COTM9, the spacecraft had
been routinely operated at dynamic pressures in the 0.30 to 0.35 N/m2 range.
3. It is now predicted that Magellan will achieve an orbital period of 103
minutes by July 27 without any further COTMs. However, if the atmosphere
continues to Rdrop away,S some down maneuvers may be considered to assure an
orbital period close to 102 minutes on that date.
4. Magellan missed a series of starcals late in the week due to a high angular
change from earthpoint to the start of the starcal sweep, but this has been
corrected.
Magellan Significant Events for Next Week
1. The periapsis altitude will continue to drift downward until mid-July, then
upward. No further COTMs are expected.
2. The "end game" phase of aerobraking is now targeted for the period between
July 27 and August 8 with a final orbit 200 km and 600 km from the surface of
Venus. Exact altitude values are still being refined.
